About the work

I work with painting and drawing as a processes that begins in uncertainty. My images develop through observing, hesitating, deciding and often revising these decisions again. Through overpainting, erasure and rebuilding, pictorial spaces emerge that are never fixed but remain in a state of becoming. I am interested in moments of states in which figures neither act nor rest, but remain suspended. These moments are zones of potential, of waiting, searching and reorientation.

Drawing often forms the starting point of my work. I start from observations, and references drawn from art history and consumer culture. What follows is a process of destruction and rebuilding, in which failure works as a driving force. It is a searching movement that suggests spaces and figures without fixing them. Figures emerge, dissolve, and return in altered form. Decisions are rarely final; they are weighed again and again, as movements within an open process. Figures, spaces and landscapes merge and shift into one another. Boundaries remain fluid; lines that define one element may simultaneously dissolve another. In this interplay, hybrid spaces emerge – spaces in which perception, memory and projection overlap.

Painting, for me, is a way of working through how to look at the world, and how we position ourselves within it. It is a practice of attention: staying with uncertainty, allowing transformation, and finding meaning through the act of painting itself. It is a form of hope in doing: a practice that stays open, that includes vulnerability. Looking closely, in a way that allows for tenderness, is something I understand as a caring gaze.
